If you’ve ever launched an ad campaign on Meta and stared at the results several hours or a day late, wondering whether to kill it, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common mistakes I see small business owners make: pulling the plug on an ad before it ever had a fair shot to shine.
So let’s talk about how as business owners we can actually know when to pause an ad versus when to let it run.
Start with one question: how long has this ad been running?
That single question answers most of the problem. The amount of time your ad has been live tells you whether you’re looking at real data or just noise.
If your ad has been running for less than 24 hours, your answer is simple: Let it run.
I can’t say this strongly enough. Maybe I should type it in all caps…IF YOUR AD HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR LESS THAN 24 HOURS, LET IT RUN!
The first day of an ad’s life means almost nothing. The algorithm is still learning who to show it to. Your audience hasn’t had time to see it, think about it, and act. Early numbers swing wildly, and if you react to them you’ll end up chasing your tail, pausing potential winning ads and panicking over nothing.
Give it time. Have you actually given it enough time to produce results? In the first 24 hours, the honest answer is almost always no. Let it run! (Cue the Frozen Music)
If your ad has been running for around 10 days, your answer now depends on a few things.
After a stretch like that, you’ve got some initial data to look at. But don’t just glance at the total and make a call. Look at the pattern.
Here’s the question I would ask: Has this ad been underperforming for the last seven of those ten days? If the answer is yes, and it’s been quietly losing for a full week straight, that’s your answer. Pause it. It had a real window to prove itself, and it didn’t. Stop spending on it, take what you learned, and try again with a new version.
But notice what that means: you’re not pausing because of a bad afternoon or a slow morning. You’re pausing because of a consistent, sustained trend over a period of 7 days. Make your decision based on data and evidence, not nerves.
The principle underneath all of this
Make sure you’ve given your ad enough time to show you whether it’s going to perform or not. Don’t cut the ad off before it has the chance to really show you if it has potential or not. Some of the best-performing ads I’ve run have looked shaky for the first few days before they found their footing.
The discipline isn’t in reacting fast. It’s in reacting at the right time, and with enough data behind you that your decision is actually informed. We are big fans of data driven decisions here at LTM Digital.
So next time you’re tempted to pause an ad, ask yourself how long it’s been running and what the trend looks like. If it’s young, let it run. If it’s had a real run and consistently lost, pause it and try again. That’s the whole framework. Test. Optimize. Rinse. Repeat.
